I'm linking up with my frenzied SLP friends to share with you a story about one of my first challenging students. I was employed in a special education school that consisted mostly of preschoolers, but had one class of students that had students up to age 14. After 7 years of working with preschoolers, I was assigned to this class. The last therapist who worked in the room had resigned after working with one student who bit and kicked her. I hate to admit it, but I was terrified to even step foot into that room.

My first day was spent observing the class, seeing how it was run, the types of activities I could help the teachers modify, and seeing the children communicate and how they functioned. The second day I began working with the students. One student, I'll call him Ben, was nonverbal, and had a tendency to be violent. I took a deep breath, sat down, and placed a coloring sheet and crayons on the desk in front of him. The crayons and worksheet went flying across the room before I had a chance to say hello. As I stood to retrieve the items, the desk was turned over, and Ben began to screech. Loudly. Nonstop. For the next half hour. Nothing I did, nothing the teacher or assistant in the room did seemed to help. After that half hour, I ran out and locked myself in the staff bathroom and cried. I couldn't deal with that all year!

One of my friends and colleagues in the school was a wonderful Occupational Therapist. She worked with Ben for several years, and when I came out of the bathroom and heard Ben still screaming, she was waiting for me. We sat and talked about Ben, and she told me several things I could do when I worked with him that could potentially assist me in keeping him calm. She came in and sat with me for the rest of the week, and there were no further incidents. The following week, my sessions were not perfect, but Ben and I were starting to bond. He slowly began to trust me and we were able to work together well. Believe me, not every session went well, but he never ever tried to bite me, and when he became physical, it was never directed toward me. Without the advice of my colleague, I never would have known to keep a hand on him at all times, give sensory breaks, and just remain calm. After that year, I wound up pursuing another job, but I still remember Ben. I found out a couple of years later that he passed away. I think of him often: he taught me patience, and that building a bond with each student is so important. He is my little angel sitting on my shoulder, especially when I am in challenging situations. And my OT friend, she taught me that collaboration is key, especially in these situations.

Today I would like to share with you a post about the main reason why SLPs don't get what we want, and some strategies on how to change that from guest blogger Dr, Karen Dudek-Brannan, Ed.D, CCC-SLP:

The #1 reason you don’t get what you want, and what you can do to get it.
Raise your hand if you’ve experienced any of the following:
Your groups of students start late because you have to spend an extra ten minutes rounding them up.
Your coworkers forget to inform you when your students are going to miss speech sessions due to special events.
You have a tiny cramped space for therapy, despite the fact that there are other rooms available for other professionals who spend less time in the building than you.
No one bothers to invite you to collaboration sessions for students you are seeing, even when you are the case manager.
You don’t get invited out to lunch with the grade level or department staff because you are your own little department and no one knows what to do with you.
You bend over backwards to accommodate everyone else’s schedules and constantly switch things around to make people happy.
You end up doing case manager duties for other teachers because they don’t know how to do it, so they just expect you’ll pick up the slack.
Seriously, is the world out to get us?

It’s easy complain about the fact that we as SLPs are underutilized, unappreciated, and overworked. Sometimes you just want people to throw you a bone, remember to send their kids to speech, ask for your input while still pulling their own weight…and just think about including you in things!
You may believe that the people you work with are just trying to make your life miserable, but there may be another reason.
It may be because you simply haven’t asked for what you want.
In their book, The Aladdin Factor, Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen wrote about why we fail to do this without even realizing.
We have become so out of touch with how we’re feeling we don’t know what we want. Or if we do, we don’t know how to ask. We’ve witnessed so many passive-aggressive behaviors we’ve learned to beat around the bush instead of coming out and asking for things.
Sometimes we’re afraid that we will be rejected, so we don’t even bother putting ourselves out there. In our minds it’s better to avoid being vulnerable, even though it guarantees that our situation won’t change.
There are other times when we’re just too proud to admit we need help or that we’re struggling. We chose this field because we like to take care of people. We like to feel needed and want to show everyone that we can tough it out. So much, in fact, that we take extra work on to help others, when instead we should be asking them to help or at least do their fair share.

It’s time to change this. So rub the magic lamp, summon the genie, start asking for what you want…and maybe…just maybe…you will get it.

Let’s clear some common stumbling blocks and find some techniques to overcome them. Here’s what you can do:
1. Ask yourself what you really want. If you aren’t sure what you want, you won’t know what to ask, so get clear about this.
Do you want the teachers to remember to tell your students to come to speech without you having to walk down to get them?
Do you want the students to remember?
Do you want your administrators to let other staff know they need to include you in collaborative discussions for academic concerns, or would you rather have teachers email you to see if you are needed?
Do you just want people to invite you to social gatherings so you can feel like a part of the community?
Knowing the answer to some of these questions will help you to determine who to ask, and what you will ask them.
2. Stop assuming people can read your mind. Chances are, few people realize that you are still fuming about being left off that last email. Nor do they realize how cramped your sessions are, or how difficult it is to run your schedule. They are too busy worrying about what they need to do.
Think about it this way-how many times has someone close to you (e.g., spouse, sibling, parent, child, friend) done something that bothered you without realizing it. Or how many times have you been the perpetrator? So is it really fair to assume your coworkers, who aren’t as close to you, know exactly what bothers you?
Chances are, people will be willing to help you if you just ask. Sure, there are some teachers who will forget about their students’ speech sessions no matter how many times you remind them, or others who don’t value what you do, but not as many as you think.
There are others that would be happy to oblige, but just don’t realize it’s what you want (because they’re used to you just coming to get your students). Just having a couple teachers help you out may make your life a lot easier.
3. Determine the best and worst possible outcome of asking. Sometimes we don’t ask because we are afraid of what will happen if we do. It’s time to start challenging our assumptions about the possible outcomes and realize they aren’t so scary.
One year, I was in the K-3 building all day five days a week in a cramped office. The occupational therapist was there one day a week for a couple hours, and she had an office twice the size. It was an oversite that had been overlooked, yet I would get angry every time I walked past that huge office not being used.
At the end of the year, I just came out and asked my building administrator if I could move. The worst possible thing she could’ve said would’ve been, “No”, and nothing would have changed, which I could have handled because I was already dealing with it. The best case scenario would have been a “Yes”, and a bigger office.
If the worst case scenario was the current situation, and the best possible outcome was an improvement, what did I have to lose? Especially when not asking almost guaranteed that nothing would change.
Oh, by the way, I got the new office.
4. Ask the right person. This one seems obvious, yet we fail to do it. Like when you blame person at baggage claim for your missing luggage and demand they find it ASAP (when it’s in another state).
This past year, I’ve had a student with a communication device on my caseload. After several sessions in a row, I noticed that his device was nowhere to be found. I asked one of the teaching assistants about it, and she said she had no idea where it was and hadn’t seen it all week. I resisted the urge to explode, but gave her a mini-lecture about why he needed to have with him all the time. Her response was, “They don’t tell me anything, I just do what I’m asked!”
I should have been going to the case manager, so I planned a meeting for the teacher and all of the assistants so that I could train the right people and be specific about what they need to do (just telling the staff “He needs to use the device,” and shoving it at them wasn’t cutting it).
Doing one training won’t guarantee a change overnight. It takes work and persistence. Even when we ask the right people, we still have to accept that they may not have the ability or willingness to do what we ask. But we can increase our odds by being mindful of who we ask for what.
5. Be specific. Failing to articulate your desired outcome is a recipe for disaster.
You know how we tell teachers to stop using negative language with our students? We tell them to say, “Walk quietly in the halls,” instead of “Stop running!” Or when we tell our students that they are not using specific language to explain what they want? We need to practice what we preach!
Ever had someone give you a laundry list of complaints, but no potential solutions? Or had someone mumble and groan, leaving you to guess why they’re upset? It’s really annoying, right?
Don’t expect people to fill in the blanks.
Do you want the IEP team to fill out their paperwork by a certain date so you aren’t scrambling at the last minute? Then don’t say, “Um, I think we need to start getting our paperwork done for that meeting…have you looked at it yet?”
Instead say, “I would like to print those forms by Tuesday afternoon. Thank you in advance for completing your sections by then.”
Want the IEP case manager to stop dumping their responsibilities on you? Don’t just pick up the slack and leave them subtle hints hoping they’ll catch on (I’ve tried nonchalantly printing out the IEP conference notice for them and putting it in their mailbox, and it doesn’t work).
Instead, say “I see Billy’s IEP meeting is due in a few weeks. Here are some times I’m available, can you let me know when you’ve scheduled it?” And then stop doing their job for them. If needed, talk to your administrator about training case managers (see #4 “Ask the right person.”).
Do you still feel uneasy about this? Are you still worried that you won’t know what to say, or think you aren’t confident enough to tackle some of your issues head-on?
Don’t worry. Confidence is a skill. Asking is a skill. Communication is a skill.
Because they are all skills, that means they can get better. And believe me, you already have what you need to succeed at this.
Even if you’ve never been good at confrontation, now is the time to change that.
Always remember, “Ask and it shall be given.”
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Being busy means work, work, work! But the plus side of it is that I have some absolutely amazing children I get to see each week. I'm so thankful for them, they make all of the paperwork, evaluations, meetings, and more paperwork worth it! I'm not driving around as much this year, which I am definitely happy about. I now work in four schools and have two home care students. Last year I had 10 home care students and three schools.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I'm thankful for my fellow bloggers. When I first started my store and blogging a few years ago, I don't think I would have stayed around too long without them, but through establishing wonderful online connections, I feel like they are part of my extended family! Some of my bestie bloggers include Jenn from Straight Up Speech, Mia from Putting Words in Your Mouth, Kelly from Speech2U, Lynda from Say What with LyndaSLP123, Rachel from Queen Speech, and Tracy from GoldCountrySLP. There are many others too who motivate me every day and help me to be the best SLP I can be. I'm also thankful for all of our readers and buyers! Without all of you, I wouldn't be inspired to create!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">My husband. What can I say? His humorous personality has kept me laughing for 19 years! I couldn't live without him. He supports my decisions, good and bad, and doesn't say "I told you so." He is definitely an optimist, which I need, because lately I've been a "the glass is half empty" kinda girl. I'm trying to get over this bump, especially because of our kids. This man keeps me going, he is my rock, and I am so fortunate to have him! My home is filled with laughter and love, and for that, I am grateful.

Not only did I begin working at another school part time, in addition to my school district position and home care, but with the end of the year coming, I feel like I am always rushing to get everything I need done accomplished!

Anyway, at the new school, I am a contractor, so I only get paid for the time I see students. I see students back to back, and don't have time to find and write in the notebooks tha the teachers send home daily. I started just writing notes on large lined post-it notes, but it was too sloppy looking, and I didn't think it looked very professional. I created this note to help me communicate better with the parents at this school. I hope you can use it too! Click on the picture to download.
So many of my students can't sit still for drill work. I have recently picked up a whole bunch of preschoolers, and they always love play dough. I wanted to make activities for them that would be fun and functional, incorprating their speech sounds, as well as language skills.

A. True.... I still have no idea why it was not considered inappropriate to cast hookers in a play, but I did play one of a pair in Guys and Dolls. And my parents let us... Lol!

B. True.... I still remember the name of the child I turned blue when dyeing Easter eggs. Luckily, his mom had a great sense of humor!

C. False.... I did not babysit for Alexa Ray, Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley's daughter. My college roommate did though! She lived on the main road in the town next to theirs, and one day she met them while she was looking after her younger siblings. They liked her, and asked her to watch their daughter throughout her senior year of high school!

Welcome to the Two Facts and a Fib a Blog Hop. I'm thrilled to be joining my fabulous SLP blogger friends in this fun blog hop, where you will have the opportunity to win a $50 Amazon gift card! Can you spot my lie?

A. I played a hooker in my school's 8th grade production of Guys and Dolls. The drama teacher decided he wanted twin hookers walking the "street" in several of the numbers. The teacher told me I looked fine, but that my twin sister would need to be "stuffed."

B. I once turned a student into a Smurf while coloring Easter eggs, and forgot to call the parents to let them know what he would look like when he got off the bus.

C. I babysat for Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley's daughter, Alexa Ray. As some of you know, I hail from Long Island, and Billy Joel lives here too. When I was younger, and before they divorced, I was asked to watch his daughter. So cool!!! Hmmm, for those of you not from this area, do you know Christie Brinkley better than Billy Joel?

Take your best guess, then hop to the next blogger, Maria from Communication Station, to see if you can guess her fib!
I am thrilled to be part of The Frenzied SLPs! I hope you are enjoying the posts you have seen so far.

My New Year's resolution this year is to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Between my kids and my various jobs, I'm finding it hard to keep organized and clutter-free. My kids are also learning about recycling and reusing, so I decided they could pitch in and help.

We went away in December, so I had to clean out my car, a massive undertaking, since I am seeing 9 students in their homes over the course of a week. I had several different bags and tons of games in the back of my car, in addition to whatever my kids brought in that never seemed to find it's way back into the house. I debated showing you a picture of the corner of my living room, but I figured I would spare you the horror!

As I was sorting through my materials, I found my boxes of broken crayons and empty glue sticks. Instead of throwing them away, I decided to reuse them and make new crayons. It's actually pretty easy, I have made them before using silicone molds which I couldn't find (organizational tips anyone ;-) ), so I used mini muffin cups and empty glue stick containers.

I hope you will enjoy this tip and find it useful.

DIY CRAYONS!

First you will need your supplies:

Old crayons
Dixie cups
silicone molds, empty glue sticks,
or mini muffin pans or cups
microwaveable container with about 2 cups of water

NOTE: I used the microwave because I could not find my silicone muffin pans. You can find directions on how to melt crayons in the oven here.

Next, sort and peel your crayons.

I forgot to take a picture of the crayons in the microwave. Place the cups of crayons in the microwave You can mix colors to make swirled crayons, but only mix dark colors with dark colors, and light with light. It takes 4-5 minutes to melt dark ones, but the lighter ones can take up to 10 minutes.

I added a microwaveable measuring cup with 2 cups of water to the microwave, along with the cup of crayons. You need to stir the crayons every couple of minutes, they are similar to chocolate chips, where they retain their shape (mostly) until you stir them. The picture on the left shows the orange melted crayon about to be poured into the empty glue stick. The second picture shows more being poured into muffin cups. You need to work quickly, as they harden very quickly.

After printing, I folded, rather than cut, each page, so the pictures and writing faced each other. I punched holes along the folded part, and then put all of the pages into a binder. I actually had to buy one larger than the one I had at home, because of the amount of pages included. A 1 and 1/2 inch binder works well for this. Once the pages were in the binder, I was ready to go! Please note, the directions say to cut the pages in half, but due to <strike>laziness</strike> my eagerness to use this, I kept the pages folded. It works for me for now, and when I have more time, I will be cutting the pages then gluing the backs of them together, to make it easier to turn to the next set of pictures and prompts.

This can also be used as flashcards, and Denise includes the prompts for each picture separately, just for this purpose.

This product is very comprehensive. It includes three pictures per student side, with prompts on the opposite side for therapists to use. I love the data sheet as well, it makes it so simple to track progress!

My students loved this. I was able to include receptive and expressive tasks, by having students first point to the pictures representing the sentence prompt. After this task, we flipped back, and I had them formulate their own sentences. My only (minor) issue with this was that I did not know every superhero included (shame on me!) and one of my students with apraxia had a meltdown when I could not understand the name he was telling me. Oops! A quick text to my husband, and the problem was solved!

This is definitely a product worth investing in. It can be used in multiple ways, with a varied age group and incorporates many goals. And superheroes, really, what's not to love? This binder will be traveling with me on a daily basis!
I am so excited about this sale! This sale last year was the first time I made a purchase on TPT and it started me thinking that I could make some products of my own!

But first, here are some products from my store that are new:

This series by Lucille Colandro is one of my favorites. I love the repetitive format, and the kids love the old lady swallowing everything in sight! You can find this companion at my store here:
I also have a homework packet for articulation. This bundle is loaded with printable worksheets to send home for homework, or they can be used in therapy, for fast drill activities. I am currently working on more sounds as well. There are several different activities on one page which I love, as well as a parent letter. Here's the link:
Speaking with them one to one, it may not always be clear, but observing them in different settings (the cafeteria, by their lockers, in the halls between bells) allows you to get an earful….

After speaking with a behaviorist in my school, I thought about how to address conversational skills. One way I have been teaching these skills is with the acronym TOAST.

T= choose a topic

O= offer opinion

A= ask questions

S= share similar experiences and feelings

T= talk about what you know

Topics

When teaching about topics, I first try to teach about the audience. Students need to understand that the topics they introduce will be different, depending on if they are speaking with a familiar or unfamiliar adult, peer, or family member. One of my students rushes to greet me daily, saying, “’Sup dude? How’s it goin? I’ma ask out one a these fine ladies, which one you like?” While this might be appropriate with friends, it is certainly not appropriate to speak this way to an adult.

The behaviorist who cotaught with me began a lesson with this power point slide to introduce differentiating between peers and adults:

It was pretty generic, and my students needed further breakdown to understand what topics were appropriate to discuss with different people. This is what I used for my next lesson:

Second, I teach students to discuss a variety of age-appropriate universal topics. We discuss weather, pets, sports teams, current events, movies and television shows.

Third, it is also important to teach students how to find the main idea of a conversation so they can jump in with relevant comments and questions. Most of my students enter into a conversation between others by introducing a new topic of their own, rather than trying to follow the conversation already taking place. Students also need to learn how to interrupt conversations politely, when to step into a conversation, and when it may not be appropriate.

Finally, it is important to help a student determine when to introduce a new topic, and how to make the transition smoothly. Some lead-ins for topic initiation include the following questions:

"Hey, did anyone hear about....?"

"What do you think about...?"

"Did you see...?"

Opinions

If your students don't know the difference between facts and opinions, this needs to be taught. Once students know the difference, they need to understand how to give an opinion politely. Most of my students don't fully comprehend others perspectives, so I teach them how other people might react to their opinions. We act out conversations and

switching roles has really helped my students. The students also learn to identify when other people are offering an opinion by identifying phrases such as:

"I really like...."

"I don't like/dislike/hate...."

I agree/don't agree with...."

"I think...."

"I believe...."

Ask questions:

Children need to learn that there is give and take in conversation. I have many students who only speak about themselves and what they like, but never ask me or their friends any questions. This makes for a very one-sided conversation, with the conversation partner feeling very left out. Again, I teach perspective-taking in this situation, typically after a weekend or a vacation, when I speak about everything I did, but don't leave students the opportunity to tell about their vacation or weekend. The students catch on quickly, and then we learn about reciprocity. I teach them to ask questions like:

"How do you feel about...?"

"Why did you...?"

"What happened when...?"

"What did you like/not like about...?"

Share similar experiences and feelings

Peers may or may not have the same experiences and feelings about those experiences. For instance, one child may enjoy roller coasters, while another one has a fear of them. A third may not ever have been on a roller coaster. We need to teach them to not only respect another's opinion, but that they do not have to have the same feeling or experience to converse. In the example above, we can teach a child to think of a time s/he was scared by something. Phrases we can teach students to say when sharing similar experiences include:

"I remember when I felt...."

"I had something like that happen to me once."

"I know what that's like because...."

"I saw/did the same thing once."

Talk about what you know

As we know, many children with ASD do this in excess. In this situation, we need to teach that it is appropriate to state what you know, but we also need to teach those nonverbal signals that reveal interest and boredom from a listener.

Some phrases we can teach our students are:

"I know a little bit about...."

"I learned about that when...."

"I saw something on tv/read something about...."

Once these skills are learned, I start combining them. If I have a group of five students, I assign one component of the TOAST acronym to each student. When the students are called on (or pointed to), they need to use their role in the conversation to respond. Here is an example of a conversation that uses these skills:

Child 1: (pick a topic): Have you read the book Divergent?

Child 2: (offer an opinion): I really liked that book!

Child 3: (ask a question): Which faction would you be part of if you had to choose?

Child 2 (offer an opinion): I would be Amity, because I want everyone to get along and have peace.

Child 4: (Share a similar experience): I read the book too, and I remember I wanted to be in Amity as well!

Child 5: (Talk about what you know): I learned all about the factions at the book club in the library after school.

This is just one example of how I teach conversational skills.

I was thrilled when I was contacted to try out Hamaguchi apps latest app. Fun with Verbs and Sentences. Perfect for early intervention therapists, as well as parents of young children, this app helps kids learn to formulate basic sentences, comprehend verb tenses, pronouns, and more.
I love the customization features in the Settings. You can choose the sentence type(s) to address, and if you would like pronouns or nouns. You can decide when to give rewards, levels of cueing, etc.

For pre and post testing, you can choose the "Watch and Say" activity in the settings. Here, you see an animation, there is a cue, "What is happening?," then a child records his/her sentence. There are three dots below the animation to help cue the parts of the sentence if needed.

The next activity is "Build a Sentence." In this activity, a child can choose the subject, verb, and preposition or object of the sentence.

My kids had so much fun building the sentences and watching the animations. The animations are engaging and are a reward in and of themselves, with or without the additional bubble game included.

I highly recommend this app because it address sentence formulation goals, pronouns and verb tenses, while being highly engaging and motivating for kids ages 2-5 (or for lower functioing early elementary students). It is currently on sale for $9.99 (through October 31), but is regularly priced at $15.99. Here is a link to check it out! http://www.appymall.com/apps/fun-with-verbs-sentences-hd
Most of the time. Many of us feel the same way, but what do you do when you are overwhelmed, especially with a new job, and you can't even stomach the thought of going in to work the next morning?

Here are some tips I have tried for when the going got tough.

1. Fake it. Plaster a smile on your face. At some point, that fake smile will turn into a real smile.

2. Take some time for yourself. Please schedule time for prep and lunch, most districts have it in your contract - take advantage of it. Close the door, put on your favorite relaxing music, take a chocolate break, whatever you need to get yourself through the next part of your day.

3. Focus on what you want out of your job, not how much you need to escape it. We all are in this field because we care about people, and want to help them live their lives to the best of their abilities. If administrators are driving you crazy or teachers feel they know more about your job than you, focus on why you are there and what you are doing. What was your goal in taking the position? Remember the positives, the smiles from your students, their successes, progress you see, no matter how small.

4. Learn more. If you think you are unqualified to treat some of your students, find a continuing education class in the area(s) in which you lack knowledge. Speechpathology.com is $99 a year and offers a plethora of courses to assist in developing your skills. Meet with colleagues or other SLPs in your district or community who can give you some insight into working with a particular disability or area in which you are inexperienced, such as AAC, apraxia, etc.... Seasoned therapists can be great resources.

5. Something I had to learn two years ago-wear your protective armor when you enter your workplace. Some people, administrators, coworkers, and parents thrive in seeng others' insecurities. This all goes back to number 1, fake it til you make it, smile even though you may want to cry. I wear my heart on my sleeve and when I had an issue at work that blew up, I spent a year learning relaxation techniques, and other ways to just get through each day. I thrived that year, and exceeded even my expectations.

We are not perfect, we don't know everything about our complex, but rewarding, profession. Ask for help, vent in appropriate places, and go in every day knowing that you make a difference in the lives of your students!Jesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15714439191575052504noreply@blogger.com21tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8881175316279645361.post-74585600887958083072013-08-18T22:27:00.001-04:002013-08-18T22:27:53.253-04:00TPT Back To School Sale: What did I purchase?First of all, thank you so much for everyone who has made purchases, and all of the kind feedback that has been submitted.
